Pinwheel Party Block #1

The Pinwheel Party started over on Twiddletails blog this week. With everything that has been going on, I haven't had a chance to sit down and make my block so I finally took the time this afternoon. I think it turned out ok...I am excited for the next block to add some of my red fabric in...

The Last Couple of Days...

...have been crazy in so many different ways over the last couple of days.

My husband's biological dad passed away last Wednesday. My husband was raised in foster care from the time he was 5 years old. He never knew his biological dad until, I believe, he was 10 or 11 years old. From the age of 5-8 or so he was taken in and out of his home, finally at the age of 8 he was placed with a family at a farm. From that point on he stayed with that family. He was treated as one of the family, never adopted because his foster family wanted his biological family to still have contact with him. Anyway...his foster family quickly became the family he considered his true family. However, his dad was always welcome in the foster family home...they often times had him over for birthdays, Christmas, and other times. His biological dad was thankful that they were able to provide for his son in ways he could not. I say all of this to say, that even though he considered his foster family his family, he still to this day holds a special place in his heart for his dad. Since my husband is an only child to his dad, he took care of the arrangements and things. We had a short memorial service on Monday with family and friends. It was a nice time. My husband is just glad his dad is not suffering more. He had lung cancer that had spread to his bones.

Monday after the service we had to head to my sister's house to pick up the kids. As we were pulling into the driveway, apparently our daughter thought shoving something into her ear would be a brilliant idea. My sister feels terrible, even now, but really, as I continually tell her, as much as I wonder why she did it, I am not surprised at all that it was her to do something like that. We decided going to the ER would be a better option then to try to dig out whatever was in her ear. We got to the ER and I said to my husband uh oh...this doesn't look good. The waiting room was packed at 6 p.m. on a Monday. But what were we to do? We had to get it out! So, we went in. Mind you, my children had not had supper and had a busy day of playing. Finally 4 hours later we had the 2 minute procedure done...what was it you ask? What was in her ear? Well, honestly to this day we aren't 100% sure...it looks like it could be part of a snap...part of a toy...anything really. Why did she do this you wonder? Because it looked like an earring of course...and the most logical thing to do with it would be to shove it in your ear! I'm telling you...this girl is going to keep us on our toes! The kids did so good for being fed vending machine snacks and up way past their bedtime!

PS...the nurse told us that a Monday night is not a good time to shove something into your ear...good to know for future reference!

Pinwheel Party

My sister, my mom, and I took a drive over to Sauders Fabric yesterday. My sister was looking for some border fabric for a quilt that she making. My mom was looking for some fabric for a quilt class she is taking with a friend. I was looking for some fabric for the Pinwheel Party Quilt Along I signed up to participate in. I made out pretty well, I even found my backing material...so excited about that! As usual I spent more than I wanted, but at least I have everything to make the quilt...
(whatcha think?)

More Snow

This has been a record year for snow in our area this year. We have gotten so much of the white stuff over the last week, we don't know what to do with it anymore. I've tried to be productive while being snowed in...with not so much luck.

I did end up making some chocolate whoopie pies...they were not a great first experience. They were not as dark as I thought they should be and they got sooo thin they burnt because they took less time then suggested. I think I ended up with a total of 3 whoopies pies edible to eat. I refused to let them outdo me...so I mixed up a bunch of pumpkin whoopie pies. I have made those before. They turned out a little better, but again, got very thin for some reason. I made them work though, and they taste good!

In the sewing world I did sew a backing for a quilt that I am going to send out to get quilted. I have a couple of projects that I just have to finish a row here or a border there...so I am trying to get a couple of those finished as well. I started a a yellow & blue baby quilt over 6 years ago and never finished it. I don't know why. So I have been working on finishing up the borders on that one so I can get the backing sewn. Then I have another baby quilt made from scraps from another quilt I had made that I have all of the blocks sewn, I just need to sew them together. I get so frustrated with myself that I have all of these started projects and never finish anything. I am hoping to get some of these finished up so I don't feel so guilty starting something new.

Well, my husband just called from the doctor's office and said he got the go ahead to go back to work. I am both excited for him and sad for me. LOL! I am so happy that they cleared him because I really had my doubts that they ever would, honestly. He is one that doesn't like to sit around so these last 7 months have been crazy for him (and me). I am sad for myself, because I am selfish and like having him around to help out with the kids and such. We were told at the holiday dinner that most of their work is out of town, so that doesn't make me happy either. But as my husband keeps saying...he's tired of living off the government, so I am happy for him and that outweighs my sadness.

If at first...

...you don't succeed...

For Christmas this year I made our littlest one a doll quilt to go with her new baby doll that she got. I found the idea over at Sew Mama Sew. I didn't love mine when I was finished as my "top stitching" was not as close to the edge of the material as maybe they should have been. When I did finish it I figured, she's only 18 months (at the time) she won't care. Well, everytime I see her carrying it around with her baby dolls it makes me a little crazy. It's just one of those things that I keep saying I should fix but have put it off. Well, tonight after I got the kids to bed and my husband somehow got suckered into staying up in our sons room...I decided it would be the perfect time to work on it. Here are 2 pictures of it fixed, I should have taken a picture before, but forgot. The only downfall is that there is now 2 rows of stitching around the blocks, but I think I actually it that way, so I will keep both in...
